Solange Knowles: Ultimately Misunderstood, Extremely Underrated
You may have seen Solange Knowles, yes... pop star Beyonce Knowles' younger sister, dancing on stage behind Destiny's Child in the early part of the millennium. But with the release of her sophomore album, "Solange and The Hadley Street Dreams", fans uncovered that Knowles has an identity of her own.
I can only imagine what it's like to live in the shadow of pop phenom, Beyonce Knowles. My sister and I get sick of people comparing us, and we're not even famous... yet. Clearly, Solange was raised in a family where success was the only option, and she has not fallen short of her family's expectations.
"Solange and the Hadley Street Dreams" consists of syncopated rhythms and artistic lyrics that are completely different from most artists her age. Her album brings relief for those of us who are completely fed up with auto-tune because all of the songs on her album carry vocal purity, and were inspired by the 60's and 70's. Back then, singers who could barely hold a note were not able to hide behind reverbing and hype men screaming behind them.
Her lyrics are filled with inspiring metaphors that give her listeners a peek into her mind, memories, and opinions about many situations in her life. The first track on the album, "God Given Name," informs listeners that she is nothing like her sister, and should not be compared to her. "T.O.N.Y.", her song loosely based on her life and pregnancy is creative and empowering. Songs like, "Valentine's Day", "Sandcastle Disco", and her number one single, "I Decided", display her incredibly unique songwriting abilities and her interesting spin on love songs. If you like good music, I suggest you buy this album, if you have not already.
Solange is different. She does not conform to fads or trends, she has impeccable taste in clothes... and just in case you did not know already, she does not care about what people think. Knowles recently decided to chop off all of her hair. Many members of the black community were stunned and the first to call her "crazy". We should all be careful about how we throw that word around... people use that word when they do not understand something. She simply wanted to stop wearing expensive weaves, she is the proud mother of a beautiful 3-year-old son, and has other things to spend her money on. I think she looks beautiful wearing her natural hair, hair weaves are too common now. Not that there is anything wrong with them. Just had to put my two cents in on that topic.
If you love listening to good music, check out her album. You will not be disappointed. There's a link to "Sandcastle Disco" at the bottom.
Stay Beautiful.
